Samsung could follow Apple by integrating its Exynos into laptops

After the success of Apple’s Mac M1, Samsung would consider adapting its Exynos SoC to laptops, in collaboration with AMD.

At the end of last year, Apple started its transition to ARM by launching its very first batch of Macs with an in-house processor, the Apple M1. The success was clearly there, as specialized critics praised these machines, especially since they were only entry-level Macs. Apple’s prowess with its M1 has obviously resonated throughout the industry, as we now learn that Samsung and AMD are collaborating on the design of a very high-end processor for a laptop. This machine could even be launched as early as the second half of this year, if we are to believe the information gleaned by ZDNet Korea, and relayed by Engadget.

AMD and Samsung had already made their collaboration official almost a year ago, and the South Korean firm reminded us of this when it presented its Exynos 2100 during CES 2021, the super-powerful SoC that powers the latest Galaxy S21. Nevertheless, we thought then that this collaboration would be limited to SoCs for smartphones, but Samsung now seems to have the ambition to adapt its Exynos to computers. This would make sense, since the manufacturer has other arguments to design exceptional machines, starting with the flock of 90 Hz OLED screens of its own design that its subsidiary Samsung Display intends to put into production soon.

If Samsung intends to follow Apple’s path, the only obstacle is Windows. The Cupertino-based company has the advantage of having control over its operating system, macOS, and has thus been able to make sure that most applications intended for Intel Macs are compatible with its Mac M1s, thanks in particular to its Rosetta 2 emulator. Samsung, on the other hand, relies on Microsoft’s solution to run its computers, and it is known that Windows ARM has clearly not imposed itself on the sector, lack of compatibility with flagship software. The latest version of Windows 10 ARM, which is compatible with applications developed in 64 bits, could nevertheless change the game by allowing manufacturers like Samsung to look more seriously at the possibility of a move to ARM.
